How to Make an Artificial Grass Lawn Look Luxurious

A green artificial lawn bordered by leafy garden plants, shrubs, mulch, and trees in a small backyard garden.

Sometimes, real grass just isn’t realistic. It may not grow well in shaded yards, or in drought-prone climates, or you might just need a lower-maintenance option due to a packed schedule or physical limitations. But know that artificial grass doesn’t have to look cheap! You can make it luxurious with a little bit of planning and the right product choices upfront.

Choose a Pile Height Between 30mm and 37mm

Pile height is the length of the grass blades. Below 30mm, the lawn starts to resemble a sports surface. Above 37mm, the blades flop over instead of standing upright. For high-traffic areas like backyards with kids or pets, stay closer to 30mm since longer blades flatten sooner underfoot. For low-traffic areas, the upper end of that range gives the lawn a fuller, denser appearance.

Buy Turf with Multiple Shades Woven In

Natural grass has light tips, darker bases, and occasional brown or tan strands throughout. Artificial turf in one uniform green shade lacks that variation, which makes the synthetic look much easier to spot. Look for turf that blends at least two shades of green with tan or brown fibers mixed in. That color variation keeps the lawn from looking obviously artificial at a glance.

See the Turf in Person Before You Buy

If you want artificial grass that looks more natural, don’t purchase without seeing it in-person first. By visiting a showroom, you can examine the turf up close. Many retailers will let you take samples outside so you can judge the color in natural light. This gives you a better idea of how the turf will suit your lawn after installation.

Add Infill to Keep the Blades Standing

Infill is the granular material packed between the grass blades at the base. Without it, blades lean and mat down quickly. Silica sand is the standard option for residential lawns. A cork-sand blend gives a softer surface underfoot if that’s a priority. Either way, the right amount of infill keeps the surface looking dense rather than flattened.

Lock Down the Edges So Nothing Curls or Separates

Unsecured turf edges curl, separate, and make the whole lawn look like it was dropped in place. Bender board or landscape edging installed around the full perimeter keeps the turf flat and flush against adjacent surfaces. Where the lawn meets a patio or garden bed, that seam needs to be tight and even. A clean edge is one of the most visible signs of a well-done install.

Brush It Regularly to Prevent Matting

Foot traffic compacts the blades in the areas that get used most. A stiff-bristled brush dragged against the grain lifts them back upright and redistributes infill that’s shifted toward the edges. For most residential lawns, brushing every few weeks is enough to maintain the appearance. After heavy rain, one pass once the surface dries prevents blades from setting flat as they dry.

The Lawn Is Only as Good as the Choices Behind It

Making artificial grass look luxurious comes down to pile height, color variation, infill, secured edges, and consistent upkeep. None of those steps are complicated, but skipping any one of them is what separates a lawn that looks installed from one that looks afterthought.
