  1. I recently (August 2013) needed a rental car in the SF Bay Area and they are really pricey, so I decided to “ask for my discount.” I’m 68 and an AARP member. I tried shopping on the internet – spent about 3 hours and found the best deal: a Thrifty Rent-a-Car “Hot Deal” offered to anybody. I ran across this on the regular “pick your car” page on their site. Then I called (on the phone) Hertz, Budget (they offer “40% off” on this list) and Alamo. I used the phone because you can’t “ask for your discount” on the internet, although most car sites have a way of saying you are an AARP member. None of the deals came close to the “hot deal,” the best (25% off a pretty high base rate) was still about $25 more over the period of the rental.

The Thrifty “hot deal” didn’t ask for my AARP membership, but I’m not saying to just go to the Thriftly site to rent a car. Next time it will probably be a different company that has the best deal. And I’m not saying that the deals on this list don’t work for those that “ask for their discount.” But I think quite a few on this list are really exaggerated. In the end, if you want to save a few bucks you have to check out the ones that seem like they offer the best chance of being a better deal. It’s just part of shopping around if you have the time for it.

    1. Ben, I agree with you regarding the need to shop around for the best discounts. Last year, I saw someone on Facebook discussing a Southwest Airline deal that offered a round trip airfare from San Diego to Houston for $149. The offer was going to end at midnight, so I jumped on it, bought a ticket and informed family of my impending visit the next morning. Would also advise checking sites like Groupon, Living Social and the like to see if they have any particular deals and discounts.
